Understanding technical data.
A material name is a useful starting point. For a capable part, the specific grade, manufacturing process and agreed application also matter.
Distinguish between material family, product and part
PLA, PA-CF and Tough Resin are material families. Manufacturer formulations, filler content and post-treatment vary. A specific datasheet therefore needs to match the product used and its processed condition.
Which information helps you decide?
- Stiffness describes resistance to deformation.
- Strength and toughness describe different aspects of mechanical behaviour.
- Temperature figures need to be considered alongside the test method, load and duration.
- Chemical resistance depends on the substance, concentration and contact conditions.
- Electrical or flame-retardant properties require a specifically defined grade and, where applicable, supporting evidence.
Layer construction makes a difference
Print orientation, wall construction, supports and post-processing affect the result. Measurements from a standardised test specimen are therefore not an unrestricted guarantee for any geometry.
